Medical Qi Gong
Medical Qigong is an ancient method of maintaining health and
promoting longevity as well as preventing and treating disease.
In the word "Qigong","Qi" is translated to mean "Life Force
Energy". "Gong" means "cultivation" or "acquired skill through
practice". When Life Force Energy is properly cultivated in the
body we are able to remain in good health, physically, mentally
and emotionally.
Medical Qigong is one of the oldest branches of Chinese
medicine, predating acupuncture by thousands of years. Today,
there are hundreds of medical Qigong hospitals and clinics
worldwide, treating dozens of ailments such as cancer,
paralysis, asthma, migraines, stress and depression, anxiety,
muscular atrophy, hypertension, insomnia, diabetes, immune
deficiency disorders and pain syndromes.
Widely understood in China but little known in the West,
medical qi gong
is a modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Medical qi
gong is a way of affecting and directing qi, or the life force,
for medical benefit. Rather than using needles, herbs, or
massage, medical qi gong relies on the ability to direct qi with
the mind, the hands, or a ritual object, but without necessarily
touching the body. Like its better known counterparts
acupuncture and herbal medicine, medical qi gong requires
thorough knowledge of TCM scientific theory. A medical qi gong
practitioner should be at least as well-trained as an
acupuncturist or herbalist. To develop skill with medical qi
gong, a practitioner needs to be highly disciplined, with a very
focused mind similar to that of a well-seasoned mediator. To
practice medicine as subtle as medical qi gong, a practitioner
must have unusual abilities of subtle
perception..
Who
Can Benefit From Medical Qi Gong?
Medical qi gong has been used successfully to treat difficult,
stubborn, and life-threatening conditions that do not respond
well to other types of medicine. Children, the elderly, people
in frail health, and highly sensitive people tend to respond
better to medical qi gong than other TCM modalities.
Qigong is a combination of two ideas:
|
 |
"Qi" (pronounced chee), means air, breath of life,
or vital energy that flows through all things in the
universe. |
|
 |
"Gong" (pronounced gung, as in lung) means the skill
of working with, or cultivating, self-discipline and
achievement. |
|
The body is enveloped by Qi or electromagnetic currents,
affecting both internal and external organ functions. As
Qi is the fundamental energy that sustains life, it is
present in every cell of the body. |
Medical qigong, one of the four main branches of Chinese
medicine, is a complete system of medicine that recognizes the
root causes of symptoms or disease, and treats the patient as a
whole. Practiced as an excellent adjunct to Western medicine,
Chinese medicine may successfully treat conditions which Western
medicine finds resistant or ambiguous.
The goal of qigong is to correct bio-energetic imbalances and
blockages in the body that accumulate throughout our lifetime.
These include poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, injuries, surgery,
toxic influences, suppression of emotions, and aging. Medical
qigong therapy and qigong self-treatment, both enable the body
to return to its natural state of health and harmony. Pain and
stress may be relieved and hormones regulated. Deep-seated
emotions, which are considered a major root cause of illness
within Chinese medicine, may be purged and released. This
strengthens the body and regulates the internal organs, the
nervous system and the immune system.
The goal of qigong is to correct these bio-energetic imbalances
and blockages. This enables the body to strengthen and regulate
the internal organs, the nervous system and the immune system,
relieve pain, regulate hormones, and strengthen and release
deep-seated emotions and stress.
Medical qigong therapy consists of treatment by a practitioner
to regulate the client's qi. After the treatment the client will
be given qigong prescriptions to assist in their ongoing
healing. Tailored specifically to the client medical qigong
exercises use physical movement, breathing methods and mental
intention to correct and restore the function in the body.
In China and more recently in the United States, doctors have
applied qigong in hospitals and clinics to treat individuals
suffering from a variety of ailments. Medical qigong therapy and
prescriptions can be used to treat people with cancer and help
reduce or eliminate side effects from radiation and
chemotherapy. It will help in treating cerebral palsy, multiple
sclerosis, Parkinson disease and post-stroke syndrome. It is
especially useful in treating any kind of chronic pain, and
chronic disorders of the digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular
and nervous systems.
Like any other system of health care, qigong is not a panacea
but a highly effective health care practice. Many health care
professionals recommend qigong as an important form of
complementary and alternative medicine.
In practicing complementary and alternative medicine, we seek to
support the care of your existing physician, therapist, or
acupuncturist. |
